Accessibility Statement

We want every tool on FreeToolShelf to be usable by as many people as possible, including people who use screen readers, keyboards, magnification, voice control or other assistive technology.

Our target

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. The site has not yet been audited by an independent accessibility specialist, so we do not claim full conformance. We fix issues as we find them or as they are reported.

What we do

• Semantic HTML with headings, landmarks and a "Skip to content" link on every page.
• Every control can be reached and used with a keyboard, with a visible focus outline.
• Form fields have labels, and calculation errors are written out in text, not shown by colour alone.
• Light and dark themes, both designed for readable contrast.
• Animations are reduced automatically when your device asks for reduced motion.
• Layouts reflow to narrow screens and up to 400% zoom without horizontal scrolling on text pages.

Accessibility options on every page

The round button with the person icon, at the bottom left of every page, opens accessibility options. Your choices are saved in your browser only and apply across the site:

• Text size: enlarges all text by 12.5% or 25%.
• High contrast: uses pure black and white text and backgrounds, stronger borders and a bold yellow focus outline.
• Readable font: switches to Verdana, a wide typeface many readers find easier.
• Text spacing: applies the WCAG 1.4.12 spacing values for line height, letter spacing and word spacing.
• Underline links: underlines every text link so links do not rely on colour.
• Stop animations: turns off all motion and transitions.
• Large cursor: shows a bigger mouse pointer.

These options complement, and do not replace, the accessibility settings in your browser and operating system, which usually work best.

Known limitations

• Charts in some calculators are visual. The same figures are available in the results panel and schedule tables next to them.
• PDF and image tools show previews of your files. We cannot add alternative text to files you upload.
• Guides downloaded as PDF are generated automatically and may not be fully tagged for screen readers. The same content is available as a web page.
• Third-party pages we link to, including affiliate partners, have their own accessibility.
