How to use the tip calculator
- Enter the bill amount.
- Enter a tip percentage or tap a preset.
- Enter how many people are splitting the bill.
- Optionally tip on the amount before tax, or round each share up to a whole amount.
Worked example
$86.40 bill, 18% tip, split 4 ways
The tip is $86.40 × 18% = $15.55, so the total is $101.95 and each person pays $25.49. If the bill includes $6.40 of tax and you tip on the $80.00 before tax, the tip is $14.40, the total $100.80 and each share $25.20. Rounding each share up to $26 gives a total of $104 and a tip of $17.60.
How it works
Tip = tip base × tip % ÷ 100, rounded to the cent, where the tip base is the bill or the bill minus tax. Total = bill + tip. Each share = total ÷ people, rounded to the cent or up to the next whole amount; when rounding up, the extra is added to the tip.
Assumptions
- Everyone pays an equal share.
- Tipping customs vary by country; the presets are not recommendations.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Either is common; tipping on the pre-tax amount is slightly cheaper. The toggle shows both.
How much should I tip?
It depends on the country and the service. In some places tips are expected, in others a service charge is already included or tipping is unusual. Check local custom.
Limitations
- Does not split by what each person ordered.
- Cent rounding means shares may differ from the total by a cent.
