How to use the discount calculator
- Enter the original price.
- Choose percent off or amount off and enter the discount.
- Optionally add an extra percentage off (such as a coupon) and the sales tax rate added at checkout.
- Read the sale price, your savings and the breakdown. To work backwards, choose Original price and enter the sale price and discount.
Worked example
$80 item, 25% off, then a further 10% coupon, 8% sales tax
25% off $80 is $60. A further 10% off $60 is $54, so you save $26, which is 32.5% in total, not 35%. With 8% tax the final price is $58.32. Working backwards, a $60 sale price after 25% off means an original price of $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.
How it works
Sale price = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100), or price − amount off. A second discount applies to the reduced price: × (1 − extra ÷ 100). Savings = original − sale price. Tax = sale price × tax rate. Original price = sale price ÷ (1 − discount ÷ 100).
Assumptions
- Tax is added after discounts, as in most shops; rules on discounts and tax vary by place.
- Discounts are applied in the order shown.
Frequently asked questions
Are two discounts the same as adding the percentages?
No. 25% off then 10% off is 32.5% off in total, because the 10% is taken from the already reduced price.
How do I find the original price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − the discount as a decimal). For 25% off, divide by 0.75.
Limitations
- Does not model buy-one-get-one or tiered offers.
- Rounding at the till may differ by a cent.
