How to use the webp converter

Worked example
Preparing images for a website
Converting JPG photos to WebP at quality 80 usually gives noticeably smaller files with a similar look, while flat PNG graphics may barely shrink. The tool shows the exact size of every file before and after, so you can keep the originals where WebP does not help. Converting WebP back to PNG gives a lossless copy for editing, usually much larger.
How it works
Each image is decoded by your browser, drawn to a canvas and encoded with the browser's WebP, JPEG or PNG encoder. WebP output keeps transparency. JPG output is drawn over your background colour first. The tool checks the type of every encoded file, so a browser that silently returns PNG instead of WebP is reported as an error rather than saved with the wrong extension.

Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded?
No. Images are processed in your browser on your own device and are never sent to our server. The page keeps working if you go offline after it loads.
Is WebP always smaller?
Usually for photos, not always for small flat graphics or images that are already heavily compressed. Compare the sizes the tool shows and keep the original when WebP is not smaller.
Can I convert WebP to PNG without losing quality?
Yes. PNG is lossless, so the PNG keeps exactly the pixels decoded from the WebP, including transparency. It cannot restore detail the WebP already discarded.
Why does my browser say it cannot save WebP?
Older Safari versions (before 17) can show WebP but not create it. Use a recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, or convert to JPG instead.
Are animated WebP and GIF files supported?
They are converted as a single still frame. Animation is not kept.
Limitations
- Images up to 50 MB each are accepted. Very large images (tens of megapixels) depend on device memory, and iPhones and iPads limit canvases to about 16.7 megapixels.
- Animated images are converted as a single frame.
- Lossless WebP output is not available, because browsers only encode lossy WebP from a canvas.
- Up to 100 files per batch.
